Logo of the National Association of Realtors.

States do not require membership in the National Association of Realtors in order to be licensed to sell real estate; however, most real estate professionals you encounter are Realtors, affiliated through their local, state and national Realtor associations. The Realtor Code of Ethics is what separates Realtors from other real estate professionals and holds them to a higher standard.

Since this is the 100th anniversary of the Realtor Code of Ethics, I am starting  a series on the articles of the code, not only as a reminder to myself, but also to educate and advise the public, and maybe prompt some of my colleagues to read and re-commit to adhering to the Code  also.  The articles of the Code are descriptions of how Realtors should act, not just suggestions.

The Code consists of 17 articles, broken into 3 divisions: Duties to Clients and Customers, Duties to the Public, and Duties to Realtors.   Over the years new articles have been added as well as Standards of Practice to further clarify the Articles. You can download the entire document, including standards of practice, HERE. [click to continue…]

I wonder how differently real estate agents would behave if offices were managed like this, and how profits we be affected for both agents and brokers.
